20 x 20 inches (51 x 51 cm) 5/8” inch deep wrap around canvas

Custom floater frame in clear white aspen painted black

I completed this painting while the 2018 Winter Olympics were on in PyeongChang, Korea. The name, Canadian Prairies, is quite intentional with a nod to the train in the distance and for the pride I feel for our young and talented Olympians.

TIME FOR ONE MORE SWIM!
TIME FOR ONE MORE SWIM!

Acrylic

24 x 16” inches (61 x 41 cm) 1 3/4” inch deep wrap around canvas

Custom floater frame in clear white aspen painted black

Manitobans appreciate the precious days of summer as they are often all too few. When enjoying the lake, an approaching cloud is only a challenge to get in one more swim!

SPRING SUNSET
SPRING SUNSET

Acrylic

18” x 18” ( 45cm x 45cm ) 2” deep gallery wrapped canvas

Painted black floater frame custom-made from clear white aspen

As I drove home one evening, I caught glimpses of what looked like a magical sunset. A short detour brought me to a spot where I could see its glorious colours.

AFTER THE RAIN
AFTER THE RAIN

Acrylic

24 x 16” inches (61 x 41 cm) 1 3/4” inch deep wrap around canvas

Custom floater frame in clear white aspen painted black

A few summers ago all we had was rain. In fact, many of the crops were compromised. All the grasses in the ditches were thriving, however, despite more rain clouds in the distance blowing in.

ABSTRACTION
ABSTRACTION

Acrylic

4 x 4 feet (122cm x 122 cm) 1 1/2 inch deep wrap around canvas

Custom floater frame in live edge baltic birch ply. Clear finish

In a celebration of Mid -Century design my challenge was to honour the colour palette often used in the 50’s, and to balance the shapes to make it pleasing to the eye, yet unrecognizable as any specific object.

CELEBRATION OF COLOUR
CELEBRATION OF COLOUR

Acrylic

30 x 24 inches ( 76 x 61 cm) 1 3/4” gallery wrapped frame

Custom floater frame in live edge baltic birch ply. Clear finish

This painting celebrates the teals, greens, oranges, and ochres of mid-century design that are iconic on their own. Balanced with the use of white and black their combination just gives me great joy!

NATURE'S RENEWAL
NATURE'S RENEWAL

Acrylic

12” X 24” ( 30 cm X 60 cm) tissue textured canvas board

Painted black floater frame custom-made from clear white aspen

On a photo shoot in Sandilands Provincial Forest in 2014, we came across this bright carpet of new green growth and vibrant oranges and reds. This area of boreal forest had been hit in 2008 by a fire and now was beginning to thrive. In the distance, there were trees still standing tall, untouched by the fire.

HARTE TRAIL MORNING
HARTE TRAIL MORNING

Acrylic on gallery wrapped canvas

24” x 36” ( 61cm x 91 cm)

When  friends moved to Charleswood they introduced us to two new treasures.  One was the always delicious and wonderful Capital Grill. I will be forever thankful to Greg and Wayne for the opportunity to exhibit there. The other was the Harte Trail. What a beautiful  oasis right here in Winnipeg.

CLEAR LAKE
CLEAR LAKE

Acrylic

3 x 5 feet (91 x 152 cm) 1 1/2 inch deep wrap around canvas

Custom floater frame in clear white aspen painted black

Clear Lake, Manitoba is one of our provincial treasures. The blue on blue with only a nod to the land fascinates me. The rocks close to shore being able to show off their colours is a special treat.

I’ve always been amazed by Frank Lloyd Wright’s design of Fallingwater that was completed in 1937.  I’m drawn to the Prairie style with its long horizontals.

SEPTEMBER GLOW
SEPTEMBER GLOW

September brings the harvest. The air is filled with the dust of the crops, and the sunsets cast a warm orange light over the changing leaves that are yet to fall. Photo credit to the talented  artist Monika Kinner-Whalen. Check out her art at mysweetprairie.ca

Painted black floater frame custom-made from clear white aspen

Painting birds is admittedly new to me and I’ve had so much fun learning about these fascinating creatures. The females are just as pretty as the males. It’s friendly and curious and has a wonderful song to go along with it’s distinctive black cap and matching bib. Chicka- dee-dee dee!

GREY JAY
GREY JAY

Acrylic

10” x 10” (24 cm x 24 cm) 5/8” gallery wrapped canvas

Painted black floater frame custom-made from clear white aspen

Amidst a great deal of controversy, the Grey Jay was named Canada’s National Bird by Canadian National Geographic. It’s tough, at times nesting as early as February. It’s smart, and can be a playful troublemaker in campsites, and it’s friendly, just like us Canadians! It is also known by its anglicized version of its Cree name of Wisakedjak as the Whiskeyjack.

3’ x 3’ ( 91cm x 91cm)

This could have been called “I pulled over for this” as that is what Carrie Lynn Tanner (@carrielynntanner) titled her Instagram photo that inspired this painting . I was drawn to how small the buildings looked in comparison to this ominous cloud.

FOUR SEASONS
FOUR SEASONS

Acrylic on gallery wrapped canvas

Many things drew me to the reference photo for this painting: the amazing clouds with the vapour trail, the huge bank of trees and the canola just starting to bloom. Taken near Bluemenort, MB. Photo credit to Carrie (@carrielynntanner)

WINTER WONDERLAND
WINTER WONDERLAND

Acrylic on gallery wrapped canvas

 16” x 20” ( 41cm x 51cm)

I’m fascinated by how much fun I can have with colours when doing a winter scene. Once the colourful  aspen where completed, something else was needed. The quirky , snow laden evergreen just seemed right.

PRAIRIE RIBBONS
PRAIRIE RIBBONS

Acrylic on 2" deep gallery wrapped canvas

2’ x 5’ ( 61cm x 152cm)

We were driving west towards the Pembina Hills, when I spotted a field of purple flax in the distance. As we got closer I saw the ribbon of  canola still in bloom as well. What luck!

HARVEST TIME
HARVEST TIME

Acrylic on gallery wrapped canvas

12" x 36" ( 30cm x 91cm)

My husband and I love to hit the country roads and take photos.  One morning we found a freshly harvested field that we could easily access.  I was fascinated by the tracks and how when so close you could see many more colours than you would see from the road.

IT'S CLEAR TO ME
IT'S CLEAR TO ME

Acrylic on gallery wrapped canvas

30” x 40” ( 76cm x 102cm)

The artist group that I paint with challenged us to do paintings of water. I did a smaller version of a photo inspired by Instagrammer @carrielynntanner and enjoyed the process so much, I tried it on a bigger scale. So much fun!

Thank you Carrie for letting me use your photo of Clear Lake, MB.

PRAIRIE OASIS
PRAIRIE OASIS

Acrylic on gallery wrapped canvas

24” X 36” ( 61cm x 91cm)

Common yet precious on the prairies are the bright blue skies and the canola fields in full bloom.  Not so common, is the single tree giving its burst of green against the vibrant yellow.

SERENITY
SERENITY

Acrylic on gallery wrapped canvas

9” x 12” ( 23cm x 30cm)

I purposefully did not put any people in this painting. As I painted it, I preferred to imagine being able to hear nothing but the water lapping on the shore and the wind rustling the grasses.

My husband and I were driving home from Winnipeg when we saw this amazing sky to the north.  The clouds were so beautiful and vibrant, but the field was not, as the soy bean crop had not yet turned its warm autumn colour.  I took "painters prerogative" to change the field to one of my favourite things to paint - canola!

My camera is filled with photos of trees in all seasons and there is a trend. I'm fascinated by the look of them when shot from below looking to the sky. It was a fun challenge to capture the looming forms so present in the foreground reaching towards the sky with the smallest of twigs.

When selecting the canvas size for this painting I wanted to have a lot of height. The thought was that it would be a good fit for an upstairs or downstairs landing.

Unframed and painted around the edges for a lightweight and packable Christmas decoration.

In my family the arrival of a huge lush poinsettia for our home was the first sign of Christmas. It was there before any other decorations were brought up from the basement. It was like a promise of the vibrant and rich colours that would soon celebrate the season. DARK-EYED JUNCO
DARK-EYED JUNCO

Acrylic

10” x 10” (24 cm x 24 cm) 5/8” gallery wrapped canvas

Painted black floater frame custom-made from clear white aspen

We were visited this spring for about two weeks by these adorable, slate coloured sparrows called Juncos. They were on their way north for the summer, and seemed to purposefully spill the seeds to the ground so they could pick them up from there. I was fascinated by their pink/yellow bill that peeked out in contrast to their slate grey top, and the flash of white in their tail feathers as they flew away.

Often my husband and I grab a coffee and go for a ride to take photos.  More often than not I’m the one in the passenger side happily taking reference shots.

VAPOUR TRAIL

Acrylic on gallery wrapped canvas

24 x 30 inches ( 61cm x 76cm)

Many things drew me to the reference photo for this painting: the amazing clouds with the vapour trail, the huge bank of trees and the canola just starting to bloom. Taken near Bluemenort, MB. Photo credit to Carrie (@carrielynntanner)

WINTER WONDERLAND

Acrylic on gallery wrapped canvas

 16” x 20” ( 41cm x 51cm)

I’m fascinated by how much fun I can have with colours when doing a winter scene. Once the colourful  aspen where completed, something else was needed. The quirky , snow laden evergreen just seemed right.

PRAIRIE RIBBONS

Acrylic on 2" deep gallery wrapped canvas

2’ x 5’ ( 61cm x 152cm)

We were driving west towards the Pembina Hills, when I spotted a field of purple flax in the distance. As we got closer I saw the ribbon of  canola still in bloom as well. What luck!

STANDING TALL

Acrylic on gallery wrapped canvas

12”  x 36” ( 23cm x 91cm)

The photograph that inspired this painting was taken just southeast of Steinbach. I loved how the aspens seemed to be showing off their colours so proudly.

L.O.T.W.

Acrylic on gallery wrapped canvas

16” x 40”  (41cm x 102cm)

We are so fortunate to have  Lake of the Woods so close by. We consider ourselves extra lucky to have friends who invite us to their cabin. Painting the islands reflection was a new challenge for me.

Acrylic on gallery wrapped canvas

30” x 40” ( 76cm x 102cm)

The artist group that I paint with challenged us to do paintings of water. I did a smaller version of a photo inspired by Instagrammer @carrielynntanner and enjoyed the process so much, I tried it on a bigger scale. So much fun!

Thank you Carrie for letting me use your photo of Clear Lake, MB.

PRAIRIE OASIS

Acrylic on gallery wrapped canvas

24” X 36” ( 61cm x 91cm)

Common yet precious on the prairies are the bright blue skies and the canola fields in full bloom.  Not so common, is the single tree giving its burst of green against the vibrant yellow.

SERENITY

Acrylic on gallery wrapped canvas

9” x 12” ( 23cm x 30cm)

I purposefully did not put any people in this painting. As I painted it, I preferred to imagine being able to hear nothing but the water lapping on the shore and the wind rustling the grasses.

FALL CORN HARVEST

Acrylic

24 x 36 inches (61 x 91cm)     5/8" gallery wrapped canvas

Natural wood floater frame

The photo that inspired this painting has a special meaning for me.  It was taken on a magical day that had my husband, my son and myself all trying to capture the beauty of our surrounding with our cameras.

SOLD

SUMMER SUNSET

Acrylic

16 x 20 inches (41 x 51 cm)     5/8" gallery wrapped canvas.

Framed in black wood floater frame

The clouds in this painting remind me so much of the amazing skies we see on the prairies. The new challenge I found in this one was to capture the movement in the grass from the wind.

SOLD

CLOUDS OVER CANOLA

Acrylic

2 x 5 feet ( 61 x 152cm)              2" gallery wrapped canvas

Natural wood floater frame

My husband and I were driving home from Winnipeg when we saw this amazing sky to the north.  The clouds were so beautiful and vibrant, but the field was not, as the soy bean crop had not yet turned its warm autumn colour.  I took "painters prerogative" to change the field to one of my favourite things to paint - canola!

SOLD

POLAR BEAR

Acrylic

15.5 X 11.5 inches (40 X 30 cm)

Canvas board matted and framed

Friends of ours actually work up in Churchill and I was fascinated by their incredible photos. They were kind enough to share a few and this is what I came up with!

MAGGIE

Acrylic on wood

8 x 12 inches (20 x 30 cm)

Painting animals is a new challenge for me and, after trying to paint the polar bear,  I thought I would attempt something closer to home.  I did this for friends of ours. Dear Maggie was a wonderful cat who was affectionate and playful.

NOT FOR SALE - Private Collection.

CHRISTMAS POINSETTIA

Acrylic

12 x 24 inches (30.5 x 61 cm)    2” gallery wrapped canvas

I came across an image of a poinsettia while searching the Net for ideas for a Christmas painting. This gorgeous red plant is part of our family's Christmas traditions, but I did not know that some consider it to be a symbol of the Star of Bethlehem.

PRAIRIE HARVEST

Acrylic

3 x 3 feet                                                                                           5/8" gallery wrapped canvas

Natural wood floater frame

I've always loved the tall grasses in the ditches that change to a beautiful orange and red for only a brief time in fall.  This early sunset photo was taken near Landmark, MB.  I was inspired by the reflection of our big prairie sky in the water filled tractor tracks.

TAPESTRY

Acrylic

Three canvas panels measuring 12 x 12 inches each

5/8” gallery wrapped canvas.  Each in a white floater frame. Full display measures 41” x 13”

Colour on canvas just brings me pleasure. It doesn't need to represent anything in particular.  It can be just as simple as play for the eyes.

SKYWARD

Acrylic

2 x 5 feet (61 cm x 152 cm)                                                             2" gallery wrapped canvas

My camera is filled with photos of trees in all seasons and there is a trend. I'm fascinated by the look of them when shot from below looking to the sky. It was a fun challenge to capture the looming forms so present in the foreground reaching towards the sky with the smallest of twigs.

When selecting the canvas size for this painting I wanted to have a lot of height. The thought was that it would be a good fit for an upstairs or downstairs landing.

SOLD

FIELD OF DOCK WEED

 Acrylic

24x20 inches (61cm x 51cm)   5/8" gallery wrapped canvas

Black wood floater frame

This farmer's field was sadly untended but beautifully over-run with rusty brown dock weed.

ROLLING MANITOBA

Acrylic

16 x 20 inches (41 x 51cm)     5/8” gallery wrapped canvas

Black wood floater frame

This mature flax field near Carman, Manitoba shows as purple in the early evening sun. I liked how the light caught just the tops of the trees and the canola was still bright yellow in the foreground.

SOLD

BIRCH TREES AND SUNSHINE

Acrylic

16 x 20 inches (41 x 51 cm)     5/8” gallery wrapped canvas

Framed in black wood floater frame

I was drawn to doing this painting for two reasons. Painting birch trees just makes me happy and I could easily imagine walking from the coolness found in the shade out into the warm clearing of sunshine.

SOLD

PRAIRIE MAGIC

Acrylic

12" x 24"

2" gallery wrapped canvas

Framed in wood floater frame painted black

One early morning we woke up to the magic of a winter wonderland.  The sun was going to quickly burn away the frost but we managed to capture this beautiful dark red barn nestled amongst the surreal trees.

SOLD

MANITOBA HAY BALES

Acrylic

16 x 20 inches (41 x 51 cm)       5/8" gallery wrapped canvas

Framed in black wood floater frame

I've always loved the beautiful, round shapes of the hay bales. Even though they are man-made, they still feel such a part of the natural landscape of Manitoba in the fall.

SOLD

BIRCH IN BLUE

Acrylic

2 x 4 foot (61 x 122 cm)             2” gallery wrapped canvas

Painting birch trees gives me great pleasure.  I enjoy adding colours into the bark that would reflect the surroundings like the blue of the sky and the green of the leaves and grass.

SOLD

MANITOBA SKY

Acrylic

36 x 36 inches (91 x 91 cm)     5/8" gallery wrapped canvas

Natural wood floater frame

The magic and beauty of our skies always amaze me. Clouds that you can see forever in the distance that also rise in towers above you.  The warmth of the sun showing in the field of swaying wheat.

SANDILANDS SKI TRAIL

Acrylic

16 x 20 inches ( 41 x 51 cm)

A winter scene was requested for this commissioned work. The photograph was taken in Sandilands, a favourite spot for our family when we first moved out to Steinbach. I had never painted snow before. Who would have thought so many colours would be needed!

This painting was awarded Third Prize at the Southeast Open Judged Competition in 2013

SOLD

LAKE OF THE WOODS

Acrylic

11 x 14 inches (28 x 36 cm)     5/8” gallery wrapped canvas

We have friends who graciously invite us to their cabin at Lake of the Woods. When my mom saw the photograph I had taken there, she made the request that I paint it for her because it reminded her of her childhood. I enjoyed the challenge of painting the water.

SOLD

BIRCH TREES IN AUTUMN

Acrylic

24 x 36 inches (61 x 91 cm)   5/8” gallery wrapped canvas

This painting was inspired by a photo I took one spring. I loved the brightness of the trees against everything that was still so brown and grey. This love affair was not to last, however.  I couldn't resist making it into an autumn scene.

SOLD

SUMMER STORM

Acrylic

12 x 12 inches (30.5 x 30.5 cm)   5/8” gallery wrapped canvas

The country road going on forever and the sun still making its presence known despite the storm is what fascinated me about this one.

SOLD

STORM TO SUN

Acrylic

12 x 36 inches (30 x 91cm)

Framed in white floater frame.

One of our favourite things for my husband and I is to go for a drive in the country with our cameras in hand. This September afternoon brought us freshly harvested wheat fields aglow in the sun. The panoramic shot captured the storm approaching from the north as the skies remained bright in the south over Steinbach.

SOLD

CANOLA TRIPTYCH

Acrylic

Three canvas panels measuring 37 x 16 inches total (94 x 40 cm)

5/8” gallery wrapped canvas

I discovered early that painting canola fields makes me happy. The challenge to try three canvases as one painting was irresistible.

PRAIRIE STORM CLOUD

TRADITION

Acrylic

14 x 14 inches (36 x36 cm) on 5/8” wrap around canvas

Unframed and painted around the edges for a lightweight and packable Christmas decoration.

In my family the arrival of a huge lush poinsettia for our home was the first sign of Christmas. It was there before any other decorations were brought up from the basement. It was like a promise of the vibrant and rich colours that would soon celebrate the season. Many thanks to the talented Daneille Bissonnette on Instagram @danbis56 for letting me use her photo as reference!
