Painting birds is admittedly new to me and I’ve had so much fun learning about these fascinating creatures. The females are just as pretty as the males. It’s friendly and curious and has a wonderful song to go along with it’s distinctive black cap and matching bib. Chicka- dee-dee dee!

Amidst a great deal of controversy, the Grey Jay was named Canada’s National Bird by Canadian National Geographic. It’s tough, at times nesting as early as February. It’s smart, and can be a playful troublemaker in campsites, and it’s friendly, just like us Canadians! It is also known by its anglicized version of its Cree name of Wisakedjak as the Whiskeyjack.

We were visited this spring for about two weeks by these adorable, slate coloured sparrows called Juncos. They were on their way north for the summer, and seemed to purposefully spill the seeds to the ground so they could pick them up from there. I was fascinated by their pink/yellow bill that peeked out in contrast to their slate grey top, and the flash of white in their tail feathers as they flew away.

14 x 14 inches (36 x36 cm) on 5/8” wrap around canvas
Unframed and painted around the edges for a lightweight and packable Christmas decoration.
In my family the arrival of a huge lush poinsettia for our home was the first sign of Christmas. It was there before any other decorations were brought up from the basement. It was like a promise of the vibrant and rich colours that would soon celebrate the season. Many thanks to the talented Daneille Bissonnette on Instagram @danbis56 for letting me use her photo as reference!

Painted black floater frame custom-made from clear white aspen
We were visited this spring for about two weeks by these adorable, slate coloured sparrows called Juncos. They were on their way north for the summer, and seemed to purposefully spill the seeds to the ground so they could pick them up from there. I was fascinated by their pink/yellow bill that peeked out in contrast to their slate grey top, and the flash of white in their tail feathers as they flew away.
